AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety plans on laying off 117 troopers, according to a memo from Director Steven McCraw.

The memo also said 60 positions will be eliminated.

The layoffs will come by May 31 when a program which allows troopers to retire and be rehired is eliminated.

Troopers in that program draw salary along with a monthly pension.

The layoffs come after DPS and other state agencies were told to make cuts due to a state budget shortfall.

DPS also announced Friday 97 new troopers have completed training and will begin patrols.
