AUSTIN, Texas - Austin Energy is accepting applications for a program to help low-income customers receive solar power at a discounted rate.

Approved by the Austin City Council earlier this month, the program will accept about 200 eligible customers. They also do not have to install solar panels.

“Austin wants to shrink its carbon footprint,” said Austin Mayor Steve Adler in a statement. “We’re doing that by getting a majority of our power from renewable sources. Now, with the new low-income community solar rate, more people can go green – and save money doing it.”

The city says the power will come from the La Loma Community Solar Project, which will be energized in January. Half of La Loma’s capacity will be dedicated to these customers on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Residents can apply to be part of the program at the Austin Energy's website.
