SUTHERLAND SPRINGS. Texas -- Relatives of a child who was among the victims in the Sutherland Springs church shooting spoke out on Monday to update the community on his condition.

Ryland Ward is still recovering after last month's massacre at First Baptist Church. He lost his stepmother and two sisters in the tragedy.

Ward’s great uncle, Earl McMahan, and his grandmother, Laura Barker, wanted to express their gratitude for all of the support the family has received from people in Texas and beyond.

“We believe that Ryland has come as far as he has because of the power of prayer. There has been just so many; not just in Texas and the United States but around the world that have been praying for him and all of those involved,” said McMahan.

However, they did say that Ward has a long way to go in the recovery process, as he was shot five times in the arm, leg and stomach. Ryland had another surgery Monday to look at his kidney. His family said they plan on spending Christmas in the hospital, but the gifts the child has received are helping.

"The gifts, the cars, he loves seeing these cards. He just lights up. He's got such an awesome smile. It makes everybody happy. And we wanted to give everybody thanks, it really means a lot to not just us but to him,” said McMahan.

McMahan said that any support from the community during the holidays would be especially appreciated.

“I want to make sure that everybody continues to pray. And if there is anyone that wants to send a card or a donation they can send it to the hospital, and they will make sure that he gets it. Everything will go to him, for whatever he needs,” he said.

Twenty-six people, including neighbors, family and friends, were killed when a gunman opened fire during Sunday service at First Baptist Church.
