AUSTIN, Texas -- Hundreds of Austinites played Santa on Saturday as they delivered presents for Operation Blue Santa.

The program was started in the 1970s by Austin two patrol officers who wanted to give back to the less fortunate.

"Glad to be here to help out and be a part of the community,” said Sid Xinos, as he was lined up waiting for his car to be loaded with toys.

This is Xinos' first time participating in delivery.

"We are looking forward to seeing these families, greeting them, wishing them 'Happy holidays.’ We recognize we are lucky and we are lucky and we want to share," he said.

The Austin Police Department said the need for volunteers and donations grows every year. This year alone they are serving 6,000 families. Preparations for the following year begin just weeks after delivery day.

"It’s special for a community event being the police chief to be able to participate. It really is heartwarming to be able to give back to those in need," said Interim Police Chief Brian Manley.

Manley makes it a point to deliver presents himself and talk with local families. He said it shows the public a different side to the police.

"Men and women join law enforcement because they have a heart to serve. They want to give back and this is just an opportunity for us to put that on display and be seen on something other than an enforcement capacity,” said Manley.

This year the program put 20,000 presents under Christmas trees for children.
