AUSTIN, Texas — A woman is dead after sustaining stab wounds and the suspect wounded by police in the Burnet Road corridor area.

The incident is happening in the 5000 block of Lynnwood Street off of Burnet Road in the Allandale neighborhood.

According to police, officers received a call at around 6:30 a.m. by the now-deceased woman, indicating that she had been stabbed and was bleeding heavily.

Police say when they arrived to the scene at around 6:49 a.m., they found a man with a knife and the woman with apparent stab wounds.

In a press conference delivered by APD Chief Brian Manley, he said the officer asked the suspect to drop the weapon a number of times, but he did not comply. He then turned to inflict further harm to the woman, and that’s when the officer shot the suspect.

He was transported to the hospital, has undergone surgery and his condition is critical at this time.

The female stabbing victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Richard Fromme, a neighbor who lives in the Lynwood Place Apartments saids he heard most of the incident.

"All of a sudden I got woken up and I heard all this hollering going on and stomping on the porch. All I know is like he was chasing her, so apparently he had a knife on him and after all of that when the police came. I heard one of the officers say, 'Drop the knife. Drop the knife,'" said Fromme.

Fromme said he didn't look outside his window, but the police did ask him for his contact information if they need to get in touch.

Other neighbors nearby didn't hear anything.

"It's really shocking because this is a very quiet neighborhood. We are comfortable walking to the restaurants, to the library, and the schools right there," said Kalan Contreras. "I didn't hear sirens. I definitely didn't hear a gunshot."

All the neighbors we spoke to had the same sentiment. There is a lot of foot traffic through the area, but never any sort of violence.

"At 12 o'clock, I'll see some strangers pretty drunk on the side of the streets, every once and then, but nothing has happened where it seems like a threatening intrusion or anything like that," said Jake Bomgaars.

Fromme said it's a different story at the apartment complex.

"There is so much disturbance going on back there you know. There's no peace and quiet. It's just total chaos," said Fromme.

Police believe the suspect may have been on drugs and likely knew his victim.

No names have been released but Chief Manley said the suspect is described a black man in his 50’s and they believe he was on drugs during the incident. No description has been released on the woman.
