CHARLOTTE -- After damage this morning to the overhead lines, repairs on the Lynx Light Rail are expected to carry on into the evening rush hour.

CATS provided an update on repairs to the overhead catenary system, which carries electricity along the Blue Line.

Light rail officials say they expect repairs to last not only thru evening rush hour, but also into late night service.

Whether passengers are headed south or northbound, the New Bern Station is where folks headed home for the day have to get off and catch a bus bridge down to 485.

CATS says early Wednesday morning, right at the beginning of service, an insulator on the overhead catenary system broke, causing the overhead wire to sag and be damaged.

They were forced to suspend service from the I-485 station, all the way to New Bern, which is not far at all from the final stop -- 7th street in Uptown.

Commuters who depend on the light rail to get between work and/or school now going to have to deal with this inconvenience a second time today.

Take note of this information if you are light rail rider:

  • If you're heading southbound, the light rail is only running right now between the 7th street station in Uptown and New Bern Street Station.
  • Past that point, a bus bridge will take you to 485 station.
  • Commuters heading northbound, do the opposite of that.
  • That bus bridge passengers need to look for is called the Lynx Connector.
