AUSTIN, Texas — On Tuesday morning, the Austin Police Department and the Austin Fire Department will lace up their tennis shoes and make a mad dash in the form of a shopping spree.

RetailMeNot, Inc. challenged the two departments to collect up to $10,000 of merchandise in two minutes or less at Sam’s Club with proceeds benefiting Operation Blue Santa.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley and Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr will represent their departments in the challenge, officials said.

"We are grateful that our business community has committed to helping thousands of families in need this holiday season," APD Police Chief Brian Manley said. "The generosity and donations that we have received at Austin Police Operation Blue Santa has been overwhelming and we are truly honored to serve such a caring community. APD would like to extend a special thanks to RetailMeNot for hosting this shopping spree."

"For the fifth year in a row, we are proud to once again partner with Operation Blue Santa for another shopping spree, We are overjoyed at the opportunity to give back to local Austin families in need, helping make their holidays brighter," said RetailMeNot official Marissa Tarleton.

Austin Police Operation Blue Santa is a nonprofit organized by the Austin Police Department, with support from the Austin Fire Department, Austin Energy, Austin Water Utilities and Texas National Guard, according to information found in the organization's website.

"Each year we provide each family we serve with a full holiday meal and wrapped Christmas gifts for each child under age 14," officials explain on the website. "Our service to citizens of Austin began back in 1972 serving about 20 families, this year we served over 5,000 families. This is only possible because of the goodwill and big hearts of Austin's citizens, businesses, and civic groups that support us each year."

The sped-up shopping bonanza is happening at the Sam's Club store at 4970 W. Highway 290 at 8 a.m.
