SAN MARCOS, Texas — An Ohio man critically was injured Wednesday morning after crashing a stolen vehicle on I-35 and running into oncoming traffic died of his injuries.

Michael Ray Russell, 30, of Wooster, Ohio, was taken off life support Dec. 9 and died soon after.

On Dec. 6 police received a call of a traffic collision northbound I-35 near the Posey Road exit. According to witnesses, Russell was driving a 2004 Pontiac Passenger, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the a concrete barrier. Russell got out of the vehicle and started walking north on the inside shoulder.

Police found Russell and attempted to detain him. He attempted to flee and ran across the interstate twice before being struck by a 2017 Ram pickup.

Russell suffered serious injuries, including a fractured skull and compound femur fracture. He was taken to Seton-Hays Hospital in Kyle and later flown to Dell Medical Center in Austin by helicopter and placed on life support.

Police say the vehicle Russell was driving was reported stolen out of Wooster, Ohio, and he had a warrant out of Michigan for receiving stolen property of a motor vehicle.  

The collision is still under investigation. Russell’s body will be taken Travis County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

The driver of the truck who struck Russell will not be charged.
