NATIONWIDE – While the holidays are synonymous with cookies and gingerbread houses, the Federal Food and Drug Administration has a warning about a specific shiny topping.

The FDA said small silver sprinkles, or “silver dragees,” sold as bakery decorations are not approved for consumption.

The silver colored balls and almonds are not in the food category because they do not follow the FDA’s food guidelines.

According to the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, silver is not an authorized color additive. When the silver toppings are sold they are not labeled as food, which means they are violating the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act.

The FDA recommends seizing all silver coated decoration items and confining them to decoration-use only.
