AUSTIN, Texas – The off-duty police officer who shot an armed driver in a road rage incident has been identified.

On Nov. 30, Detective Jason Jewett was driving home when he came across a man pointing a gun at a family inside a vehicle. Jewett approached the armed suspect, igniting a gunfight and injuring the man.

During the gunfire, the family was able to escape from their car and hide in a nearby bush.

The wounded suspect was found unconscious in a bush. He was transported to the Dell Seton Medical Center to treat his injuries.

Police have not said who fired first in the gunfight or if the suspect is facing charges.

Jewett is a 19-year veteran with the Austin Police Department. He has been placed on administrative leave while police investigate the shooting.

A criminal investigation is underway by the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers.
