SAN ANTONIO - Animal Care Services is reminding pet owners to be kind, and keep pets inside.

With the forecast calling for chilly conditions this week, ACS is enforcing its 'Zero Tolerance' policy. The policy means pet owners who fail to provide adequate shelter will likely receive a criminal citation. ACS said bringing animals inside is best - even in the garage - but if you can't, buying a dog house is another option.

However, the dog house must include an elevated entrance, three sides and a roof. ACS says many owners attempt to house animals other ways.

"People may put up a vari kennel, they may put up a wire kennel, they may put up just a tarp for shelter. That's not acceptable. It has to be as defined. The animal has to be able to get out of the elements and stay out of the elements," said Joel Skidmore of Animal Care Services.

Violators could face citations starting at $300. If necessary, ACS can also remove the animal from the owners care.

"People need to be responsible," said Skidmore. "They need to be aware of the weather conditions."

ACS is also reminding owners about the illegal use of chains as tethers for pets as officers remain in full force.
