AUSTIN, Texas — A new program is allowing you to create your own adventure while wandering through downtown Austin.

The Art in Public Places program is a journey starts at the Beacon, a 9-foot steel sculpture, outside the new Central Library.

From there, you can open the Wander app on your phone and choose from four possible story adventures — each written and illustrated by Austin artists.

You'll get a new chapter of the adventure at the different locations.

Chris Gannon says he and other artists started the program for fun.

"This was originally a street art project. Maybe six years ago, we were hiding pages for choose your adventure in back allies. It was very mysterious and subversive and you just stumble upon it,” Gannon said.

Now the City of Austin is backing the program as an effort to get people out and about downtown.

Wander will debut next Saturday. It's free and family-friendly.
