AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Police Department getting into the spirit of giving.

Friday morning was its Blue Santa breakfast, which kicks off its toy drive for kids across Central Texas.

Last year the department delivered toys to 6,000 homes and 15,000 kids. This year an HEB gift card will be included to help those family have a full Christmas dinner.

"We hope this year that we actually do more. If we get the opportunity, we will," said Mike Sheffield, Austin Police Department's community liaison.

APD said they were the first department in the country to do Blue Santa back in 1972.
