AUSTIN, Texas – During the holidays in 2016, one in four deaths on Texas roads involved alcohol.

This year, the Texas Department of Public Safety wants to make sure everyone arrives home safe for the holiday season.

“Tragically, there are many families who experience the holidays without a loved one due to a drunk driver,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “We need to remember that each time someone dies or is seriously injured on our roadways, it affects a family and an entire community."

In Texas there were a total of 2,321 alcohol-related crashes during the 2016 holidays. Of those crashes, 82 people were killed and 199 were seriously injured.

TxDOT is launching their “Plan While You Can” campaign to remind drivers to plan for a sober ride home after holiday festivities. Part of the campaign features an interactive dodge ball game where snowballs are thrown at participants as virtual drinks are added to the screen. The purpose is to show how reaction times are slowed down the more you drink.

The risk of drunken driving goes beyond fines up to $17,000 and jail time as more and more people die on the roads each year. Drivers are encouraged to check out SoberRides.org to plan a safe ride home.

"Don’t make a bad decision that could cause heartache for your family and others. Make a plan to get home safely. It could save lives,” said Bass.
