SAN ANTONIO — Planning began two years ago. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff then celebrated the recent purchase of Toyota Field. Now, not so much.

“I would have never gotten into this had we known those facts," Wolff said after being asked about a recent announcement by the MLS.

Wednesday, MLS announced San Antonio was not one of the four finalists for the two new teams.

Earlier this month, Wolff received a letter from the MLS attorney saying the Spurs application is being deferred until the second phase of the expansion.

When that phase begins, we don't know.

Wolff says Major League Soccer officials were enthusiastic about San Antonio when he spoke to them before agreeing to buy the field. The assumption was that San Antonio would have a team soon.

"The city put up $9 million, we (Bexar County) put up $9 million and I believe the Spurs put up about three or so. We bought the field in the name of both the city and the county," he said.

Even further complicating the chances - the judge says - is a possible move by the Columbus' MLS team to Austin. Even though the Columbus Austin deal is unrelated, if it happens, Wolff says San Antonio can kiss MLS goodbye.

"The commissioner goes over there and supports it, right when we're applying. There's no way there's gonna be a team in Austin and San Antonio. Our field, Toyota field is only 54 miles away from the city limits. We're both small market towns," he said.

Wolff believes MLS should have disclosed that proposed move so Bexar County could have made a more informed decision to buy the field.

"To me, that was a very inappropriate at best, fraudulent at the worst process," he said.

He's now asked the Bexar County District Attorney's office to investigate.
