SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department dropped a frozen turkey into a deep fryer while it was cooking at extreme heat to demonstrate the dangers of frying a turkey the wrong way.

Chief Charles Hood is urging people to follow the instructions that come with the fryer. Another tip is to make sure your turkey is completely dry before frying it.

"A lot of times if you put a completely full turkey in a full thing of oil that is not thawed up, sometimes it will explode and just blow right out at the top. So again, you just never know what you're going to face. But we want people to be safe. We want people to enjoy their Thanksgiving. We want the memories to be enjoyable verses a tragedy," said Hood.

According Chief Hood, Texas leads the nation in the most grease and cooking insurance claims on Thanksgiving Day.
