AUSTIN, Texas — A solemn event to honor transgender lives lost to violence took place on the steps of Austin City Hall.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual vigil held across the country.

This year, 28 names were read out loud, signifying people killed out of prejudice.

Three of those victims are from Texas.

"It is not okay to treat anybody in the way tha tthe people that we are honoring here have been treated in the past 12 months, so we stand not only for transgender and gender diverse people, gender non-conforming people, but we stand for anybody who through violence or hatred loses their life or is attacked," said Lisa Scheps with the Transgender Education Network of Texas, who hosted the event.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler proclaimed Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance.
