SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced on Friday it is investigating the death of a Texas State University student.

Investigators: Too soon to know if charges will result in Texas State student's death

Twenty-year-old Matthew Ellis died on Monday, Nov. 13, at an off-campus location. Investigators said he had attended a fraternity party hosted by Phi Kappa Psi on Sunday night at the apartment where he was found unresponsive.

In a statement on Friday, the TABC said its investigators are working to determine where the alcohol came from.

“If it is found that alcohol played a role in this event, we will expand our investigation to identify any retailers who may have violated the law by selling to a minor or an intoxicated person,” TABC Executive Director A. Bentley Nettles said. “These violations constitute an extremely serious risk to public safety, and TABC will punish any parties involved to the fullest extent of the law.”

In response to Ellis' death, Texas State University suspended all fraternity and sorority chapter activities.
