AUSTIN, Texas - Austin police officers are voting this week on their new contract with the city.

Union leaders say the new contract includes several accountability measures, including allowing people to file anonymous complaints online.

The contract also requires an assistant chief or the chief to be alerted if an officer's behavior could lead to a criminal investigation.

If the City Council doesn't adopt the contract, the Police Association says 300 officers might retire immediately in order to avoid the consequences of having no contract protections.

"That would be catastrophic in my opinion. We would have no one left in detective bureaus investigating crimes against children or violent crimes. They would all be back on patrol," said Ken Casaday, president of the Austin Police Association.

A group of police critics wants city leaders to reject the contract and said it doesn't go far enough in terms of transparency.

The Austin Justice Coalition wanted the public to have subpoena power, which police say is unprecedented.

Members of the Austin Police Association have until Friday to vote the proposed contract up or down.
