AUSTIN, Texas - Mayor Steve Adler said no incentives were offered to Amazon, despite the company saying tax breaks will be a factor in their decision.

Adler said the City Council needs to agree to the incentives before they're put on the table. The council recently passed a resolution to explore how the city handles tax incentives as a lure for businesses.

In a letter sent to Amazon last week, Adler praised the city's collaborative and innovative spirit, credited top STEM education at Austin's high schools and universities as well as low numbers of unemployment and veteran homelessness.

Adler did admit transportation in Austin isn't perfect and called mobility in the city a "new frontier."

But he said in Austin, Amazon would have the chance to be more than just a building - it would be part of the city's social and economic culture.
