RALEIGH -- Bowe Bergdahl says President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his criticism of the soldier _ preventing him from receiving a fair sentence on charges he endangered comrades in Afghanistan.

Bergdahl's lawyers on Tuesday asked to have the case dismissed because of Trump's remarks after their client pleaded guilty this week. They cite a news conference in which Trump indicated he stands by his campaign-trail criticism of Bergdahl.

Asked about Bergdahl, Trump said: "I think people have heard my comments in the past.''

The Army judge overseeing the case previously ruled Trump's comments didn't constitute unlawful command influence. But the judge noted the comments were made before he was president.

Bergdahl pleaded guilty Monday to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. He faces up to life in prison at sentencing starting next week.
