AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin is among the nation's top 15 cities for vegans and vegetarians, according to a new study conducted by WalletHub.

The report, titled 2017’s Best Cities for Vegans & Vegetarians, compared the 100 largest cities across 15 key indicators of vegan and vegetarian friendliness.

Austin ranked No. 13 on a rating scale ranging from 1 being the best to 50 being average. The top rank went to New York City while Greensboro, N.C. came in dead last.

The methodology included the share of restaurants serving meatless options to the cost of groceries for vegetarians to salad shops per capita, researchers said.

Other Texas cities included Houston at No. 17, Dallas at No. 37, and Plano at No. 49. The cities of Lubbock, Irving and Fort Worth came in the 55th, 59th and 66th positions, respectively.

El Paso was the worst-performing Texas cities on the list, ranked No. 81 on the list.

The WalletHub study comes ahead of World Vegan Day to be commemorated on Nov. 1.
