BELL COUNTY, Texas – A suspect was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy near the Williamson County/Bell County line on Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened near Texas State Highway 195 and Mountain Creek Road, which is 15 miles south of Killeen, shortly before 2 p.m.

Williamson County sheriff's deputies were doing a welfare check at the suspect's home west of the Florence area. When the suspect saw deputies, he ran to his vehicle and drove off towards Killeen, according to the Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody.

The pursuit eventually ended on private property in Bell County when the suspect ditched the vehicle and took off on foot. The suspect fired at the authorities while fleeing, which led to the suspect being shot by an officer, Chody said.

The suspect died at the scene.

Chody would not comment if the officer is from Bell County or Williamson County. The suspect was not immediately identified.

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating.
