FORT JACKSON -- An incident at a South Carolina military base left two soldiers dead and six injured Friday afternoon.

A statement released on Fort Jackson's Twitter account said that there was an incident where a military vehicle hit several soldiers. The people injured were transported to a hospital located off the Army base. 

Names of the deceased soldiers have not yet been released pending next-of-kin. 

U.S. Army Training Center and Fort Jackson Commander Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson released a statement saying:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers we lost today and to the families of the injured, they represent the best of our Nation and we will endeavor to support all those affected through this difficult time."

He said the cause of death will be investigated. 

Fort Jackson is the main U.S. Army initial training base in the country, training 44,000 soldiers each year.
