AUSTIN, Texas — Turtle enthusiasts and biologist came together Sunday to conduct turtle research and conservation at Bull Creek.
The County Line, a restaurant on Bull Creek, is home to a massive turtle community.
The restaurant celebrated its turtle customer, and human ones, too with Turtlemania.
Many Austinites watched as The Turtle Survival Alliance, spent the day studying the reptiles with the goal to monitor the turtle population.
"It's important to be able to assess, I think, the condition and the quality of the populations of turtles that we consider to be abundant, because we have them here today. Who knows what's going to happen in ten, twenty years. And so getting the baseline information about the population overall could be really useful for management ideas,” said University of Texas herptologist Carl Franklin.
Proceeds from the event went to the Turtle Survival Alliance’s North American Freshwater Turtle Research Group.
Organizers hope to collect enough data to make a presentation of their findings at the 2018 Turtle Survival Alliance conference in Denver.
