Dennis Kelly wasn’t born in Austin but he got here as fast as he could. Well, not really, but I’ve always wanted to start a bio with that.
The story begins with a young boy who played all of the sports growing up in Houston, but especially fell in love with football and baseball.
After earning All-State honors as a senior second baseman, Dennis decided that he wanted to play with the big boys and took his talents to Abilene Christian University where he would quickly find out, that he really wasn’t good enough to play with the big boys. So what was a young man to do, having all this innate sports knowledge, with no sports to apply said knowledge to? Well, get a job in sports TV, they said!
That’s exactly what Dennis did. He started his broadcast career at KNSD, the NBC affiliate in San Diego, California. After California Dreamin’ as an Associate Producer and “Sometimes” Reporter for 3 years, Dennis found himself back in his hometown of Houston, at the NBC affiliate KPRC.
Filling a very similar role while back home in the “H”, Dennis couldn’t help but think about the time he had spent in Austin as a youth, frolicking in the springs and swimming in the lakes. He had also fallen in love. So not only feeling a desire to move to Austin for work, now Dennis also had a strong desire to go to the Capitol and get himself a wife.
In 2011, he was hired as the sports producer at Spectrum News (then YNN), and has since gone through a couple of station name changes, a promotion, and a handful of Texas Associated Press Broadcaster Awards. In 2014, he did get himself that wife, and Dennis and Veronica Kelly have been happily married ever since.
When not at work, you can find Dennis trying to break 90 on the golf course, checking out one of Austin’s many culinary gems with Veronica, BBQ-ing or laying in the sun near a cold body of water.
