SAN ANTONIO - It's never too early to start thinking about Fiesta -- and the planners behind the Battle of Flowers Parade have been hard at work.
It's not often a family gets to be a parade's grand marshal, but this Tricentennial, La Familia Cortez will lead the Battle of Flowers Parade.
"I remember my grandfather. When he was alive, he would always take us to the parade here on Commerce Street close to Market Square. We used to rent the second floor building and hang out the windows and bring food from the restaurants. I know with my kids, we made it a tradition. So for them to be on the other side it's going to be a wonderful opportunity and a memory they'll have the rest of their lives," said Pete Cortez.
"You will see a wow factor this year with the Battle of Flowers as always we have over 200 entries. This year will be spectacular," said Battle of Flowers President Rhona Calvert.
It might not be easy representing four generations on the floats, but Cortez says there's room for a lot of creativity.
"We're hoping that over 50 will be able to participate. Some on floats, some walking, and some on a cool party bus," Cortez said.
Since it's a year for "firsts" and extra attention, the parade itself will start two hours early.
"We will really take advantage of the weather and make sure that all of our children and all of the schools get to participate the whole day," said Calvert.
Parade organizers are looking at a 10 a.m. start time, which is bumping the parade up two hours.
