CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas – A Caldwell County couple says they're fighting for their land and their daughter's memory.
A proposed landfill could sit about 1000 yards from the Friedrich family farm.
It would sprawl across 250 acres and climb to the equivalent of 17 stories, overlooking the Friedrich family farm.
"Basically we had a guy show up at our place and he says 'we bought the ranch. We're going to put a dump over there. There's nothing you can do about it. The county has no say in it,'" said Byron Friedrich.
The Friedrich's are worried about their property value, the smell, their health and landfill traffic.
"Every one of their trucks will have to go through that intersection, and that intersection has proven to be one of the most dangerous intersections in the county," said Friedrich.
Jodie and Byron's daughter, Allison, lost her life there. Now she’s memorialized under an oak tree on the family farm.
"What she wanted was her ashes brought back up to the ranch, and that's what we did. … Someone gave us this oak tree and we planted it here and we call it the Allison tree," said Jodie Friedrich.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has yet to issue the landowners a permit, but the Friedrichs say it's in the works.
The pair says they'll continue to fight against that possibility - for Allison's sake.
"She'd be horrified," said Jodie Friedrich.
We called the company set to build the landfill, Green Group Holdings, LLC out of Georgia, for comment but were unable to reach anyone.
