AUSTIN, Texas — The chefs of the future put their skills to the test and got to experiment with healthy eating on Thursday.

The Austin School District hosted its own “Chopped" competition. Culinary students from Lamar and Burnet Middle Schools came up with their best smoothie recipes using the secret ingredient — cilantro!

The kiddos say it's all about being nutritious and delicious.

"I learned that you have to be kind of patient and, you know, you have to find out just the right amount,” said Jordan Walker, sixth grader at Lamar Middle School.

The students presented their concoctions to a panel of judges who scored the recipes based on taste, appearance and originality.

The judges included AISD's director of nutrition.
