AUSTIN, Texas — Austin leaders say they will give first responders anything they need to end the city's K2 crisis.

Just this week, police arrested two people suspected of dealing the synthetic drug and confiscated 2,600 doses of the drug.

Police say dealers are targeting Austin's homeless population since the drug is cheap and buyers might not know the drug's risks.

The head of the Greater Austin Crime Commission says K2 would not have reached this point if Austin hired more police officers.

"The mayor and the mayor pro tem are on the right track to address additional resources at this K2 problem. We just want to make sure that doesn't mean just hiring new officers and putting them downtown. We don't want to leave the neighborhoods vulnerable,” said David Roche, Greater Austin Crime Commission.

The city manager will make recommendations for additional help in the coming weeks.
