AUSTIN, Texas -- One Austin author visited the George Washington Carver Museum, explaining Hip Hop's ongoing role in helping young people live long, healthy and productive lives.

In his book, “The Healing Power of Hip Hop,” Raphael Travis Jr. reaches out to audiences to help them understand hip hop as a culture.

Travis says he hopes people will challenge themselves to tap into the core idea of improvement that hip hop has to offer as a way of coping with diversity and not limit the genre to stereotypical ideas presented in popular entertainment.

”The two main questions that I ask anybody to think about is, ‘What can I learn, and how can I grow,’” said Travis. “You… really engage the culture in a way and ask yourself ‘When I interact with this music, what can I learn and how can I grow,’ specific to that unique situation that I feel that I face as a member of whatever group."
