SEGUIN, Texas - Since opening in 2015, Seguin's Tavern on the Creek is busy on any given day of the week.
"Every quarter has gotten better. Seguin has really embraced us," Executive Chef Paul Schroeder said.
It's about to get a lot more business.The restaurant sits right along the newly completed Walnut Springs Trail.
"When we first opened we were worried about foot-traffic, and so much has been developing and happening out here that we aren't worried about that. It's a good thing now," Schroeder said.
After 11 years of planning and building, the hike and bike trail is ready.
"When you're developing a city, it's about quality of life. Our parks and our trail system is a huge part of that," said City of Seguin Public Information Officer Morgan Ash.
Locals have already started using the 2.5 mile trail that runs from the south end of town all the way up to Interstate 10. It runs right through the center of Seguin, which leaves room for business growth and city amenities like the new library along the route.
The more than $3 million in funding for this project came as a collaboration between TxDOT and the city of Seguin, meaning the state also supports Seguin's potential for growth and development.
"It's all about finding ways of multi-modal, but not using your car. The trail was kind of a starting point for development," said Ash.
Once the trail promised a gateway for growth, businesses like Tavern on the Creek put their chips in.
"It's really revitalizing this downtown area," Schroeder said.
It's giving business owners, locals and visitors a path to new opportunities along the creek.
Earlier in 2016, Seguin reached a population milestone of 30,000 people.
The official ribbon cutting for the new trail will be held Tuesday.
