AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin police officer who was involved in a funeral procession accident last week was laid to rest on Monday.

Ofc. Amir Abdul-Khaliq died Sunday night. He was hit Thursday while providing a motorcycle escort for a funeral.

A private service was held at the Islamic Center of Greater Austin.

Muslim tradition dictates that a funeral and burial happen as close to the time of death as possible.

Abdul-Khaliq was with APD for 17 years and was a father of five.

A fellow officer remembered him as a man he looked up to.

"Just a great guy. He's impeccable. Impeccable with his word, he just he never said a bad word about anybody, and nobody had a bad thing to say about him. Also with his actions, he always did the right thing and he sets a good example for all of us to follow,” said Chris Frierson of the Austin Police Department.

After the funeral, Abdul-Khaliq was laid to rest in Dale.

Chief Acevedo said there are tentative plans for a public memorial to be held Friday.
