The U.S. Department of Energy is recognizing Austin for its part in improving access to solar energy in the city.

Austin was named a “SolSmart gold designation” for being a leader in renewable energy.

The city is being credited with making it easier and cheaper for people to go solar. Austin Energy was also praised for helping to lower solar installation costs for more than 50 municipal buildings.

“Austin continues to be a leader in supporting renewable energy and this designation affirms that,” said Jackie Sargent, Austin Energy general manager. “As a community, we have put an emphasis on conservation and sustainable energy programs to ensure that we continue working toward achieving our emission reduction goals.”

Austin and 13 other cities were also honored by the department.
