AUSTIN—An Austin teacher is suing the city and an Austin Police officer after a violent arrest that gained national attention.

An attorney for Breaion King claims her damages are worth $1 million.

The arrest began when police tried to pull King over for speeding. Officer Bryan Richter followed her into a fast food parking lot.

King seemed surprised and confused when Richter ordered her back into her car. The exchange escalated quickly, when the officer threw King to the ground. Later, in the squad car, a second officer told King that black people have violent tendencies, and that is why white people are afraid of them.

King's 11-page suit filed in U.S. District Court includes standard claims involving use-of-force cases and other allegations. For instance, King and her lawyers say they asked to meet with city officials, including Mayor Steve Adler, and received no reply.
