AUSTIN, Texas—A new electric bike program is starting in Austin and it's the first of its kind in the nation.

Austin Energy is giving Bike Texas the first rebate for its new E-Bike Fleet program.

The new program offers a clean energy alternative for making deliveries in downtown's congested streets.

The bikes average a 34-mile range on a two-hour charge and are often used in hilly areas.

"So it is real exciting to be in a city that is actually coming up with a program that will encourage and enhance E Bicycle use as parts of fleets,” said Austin mayor Steve Adler.

To get a fleet rebate from Austin Energy, applicants have to purchase five to 25 qualifying E Bikes.
