AUSTIN, Texas -- Police say a man armed with a machete was rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning after he was shot by an officer during a SWAT standoff near a South Austin elementary school.

At around 4:15 a.m., SWAT officers were called to the 1000 block of Turtle Creek Boulevard near Odom Elementary School after reports of an armed man, according to the Austin Police Department.

After officers arrived at the scene, they determined that the man was armed with a machete.

A reverse 911 call went out to the surrounding neighborhood to warn residents.

A negotiator was then called in and attempted to communicate with the man.

At that point, the suspect said "Watch this," and made a motion with his arm as he was holding the machete, and an officer fired at him, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news briefing.

The man was shot in abdomen and was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge.

Police said the suspect's family indicated that he is 19 years old and was distraught over a break up with girlfriend. His family added that he has a history of depression.

Acevedo said the officer who shot the suspect is a 15-year veteran of the department. He has been placed on paid administrative leave during the shooting investigation.

The names of the suspect and the officer will be released later on Tuesday, police said.
