AUSTIN--The Travis County GOP is working to adjust its party operations.
The election of conspiracy theorist Robert Morrow as chairman has stirred controversy within the party. With Morrow scheduled to take office in less than two weeks, the party is trying to limit his role.
“The Travis County Republican Party has been a toothless tiger for 25 years, or a toothless kitten,” said Robert Morrow, the Travis County Republican Party Chairman Elect.
When asked to describe his new job as Travis County GOP Chairman, Morrow said he is like the coach of the Bad News Bears now. He'll be the first to admit he's not in it for ordinary reasons.
“I don’t have a whole lot of interest in the day-to-day functions of the party,” Morrow said. “My true interest is political truth-telling.”
Which is why the party, led by its current chairman James Dickey, wants to make some changes.
“The party is bigger than any one person, it’s bigger than any one position, even,” said Dickey.
At Tuesday night's meeting, the Travis County GOP proposed bylaws to create an executive vice chairman position, and to redistribute responsibilities recent chairmen have been delegated.
“For hiring and firing, and negotiating wages, and managing that staff on a day-to-day basis,” Dickey said. “And Robert’s been very clear that he has no desire to do that.”
