AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Bar Association is holding training for attorneys who want to help families separated at the border seek asylum.

The training will be held at the Austin Bar office on Monday, June 25, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The association says asylum seekers whose children have been taken away from them need pro bono attorneys to assist them on the very first part of the asylum request process.

“Immigration advocates have been overwhelmed by the response of the legal community looking for ways to get involved and help the families affected by the policy of family separation at the borders,” Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, an immigration attorney said. “It became clear quickly that we needed to provide attorneys with training so they can start representing the families immediately.”

A wait list for the training is growing daily. Each attorney who has registered for the training has committed to taking pro bono cases either at the Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, TX, or the Port Isabel Detention Center in Los Fresnos, TX.

Professors with UT's School of Law immigration clinic will be providing the training.
