SAN ANTONIO — A man is dead and suspects on the loose in what police believe was a robbery on the city’s east side.

The shooting happened in the 2900 block of Rigsby Avenue around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, June 7.

The man, identified as Leon David Perkins, age 50, was wounded critically and later died in the hospital after undergoing surgery.

Police were called to the location for an injured/sick person. When they arrived, they found Perkins unresponsive by a tree outside of the apartment complex. According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, he was shot once, possibly twice, in the upper torso.

McManus said they’re looking into robbery as a possible motive, and that the victim's shoes were stolen but could not yet confirm if anything else was also taken.

The suspect(s) fled the scene in a grey SUV — McManus said multiple subjects were in the vehicle according to witnesses.

Police are still actively investigating.
