PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- The Pflugerville Police Department on Thursday warned that a telephone warrant scammer is claiming to be with the department.

The caller claims to be a sergeant or detective and that the recipient of the call has a warrant out for his or her arrest. The caller says that in order to avoid arrest a payment must immediately be made via wire transfer or gift card.

When the scammer calls, the Pflugerville Police Department’s number appears on caller ID, making the call seem authentic.

The department said it will never call and ask for money over the phone and that if you receive the call you should hang up immediately.

The department said the elderly are often the targets of scams and that you should alert them to this one. Additionally, if you or anyone you know has been a victim of the scam, you are asked to immediately report it to your local law enforcement agency.
