CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A rare, polio-like virus has infected one person in North Carolina, and possibly two more, according to state health officials.

  • A polio-like virus has infected at least one person in NC.
  • The CDC says it is extremely rare.
  • The virus is called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM).

The CDC says they aren't exactly sure what is causing people to contract Acute Flaccid Myelitis, or AFM, but they do say it is extremely rare.

And while they are working to determine what is causing it, pediatricians like Dr. Lawanna Starks say the best thing is to just practice simple steps to keep your family safe.

β€œIn very rare cases Acute Flaccid Myelitis can occur and for that parents should be looking out for weakness,” says Dr. Starks. β€œA sudden onset of weakness that typically involve maybe the eyelids, the face, droopy lips, difficulty swallowing, all of those are signs of this condition that can just follow a mild cold.”

State officials have not released where in North Carolina the confirmed case and two other possible cases have occurred.
