RALEIGH, N.C. -- Heavy rain and flash flooding late Sunday night and early Monday wreaked havoc on the Raleigh area and many other places around the region.

  • Heavy rains caused problems around the Raleigh.
  • Some drivers had to be rescued from cars that became stuck in the high water.
  • Watkins Grill in Raleigh flooded due to a backed up culvert.

Numerous water rescues were reported as cars ran into high water from strong storms.

A tree knocked down by the storms was dangling over westbound lanes of I-440 just before the Lake Boone Trail exit. Police had to blocked some lanes until crews could remove the tree.

A U-Haul business was flooded along Capital Boulevard in Raleigh. Many moving vans had water half way up their tires in the parking lot.

At one point, Atlantic Avenue at Hodges was closed as Crabtree Creek overflowed its banks leading to a water rescue.

Other water rescues were reported at Spring Forest Road, Wake Forest Road, South Saunders Street and Capital Boulevard.

The owner of Watkins Grill in Raleigh is also cleaning up after a storm culvert backed up due to the heavy rains, leading to flash flood water inside the restaurant.

"We threw everything out all the refrigeration units, everything we threw out everything and I have to reorder in the morning and that's why I can't open right away because I have to reorder all the food, all the produce," said owner Rhonda Selph.  "I have to throw it all out."

So far, no injuries have been reported.
