EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -- Beach safety is at the top of the list for the Emerald Isle Fire Department.

Officials are reminding people about the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding rip currents.

During the last week of May and first week of June, lifeguards made about 100 rip current rescues.

Beach-goers are urged to swim near lifeguard stands and always be mindful of the warning flag system.

Fire officials recommend wearing a hat on the beach and remind you to drink plenty of water.

"Yesterday I was out here, there was a nice breeze,” said Andrea Wells. “Today, it's hot so I'm just going to go in the water, sit in my chair and drink my water."

In the summer, fire officials say it's not uncommon to respond to heat-related illnesses on the beach.
