Monday was the first of several days with dangerous heat and humidity.

Highs today maxed out in the mid 90s for many, with a few locations like the Sandhills climbing into the upper 90s. With dew points in the 60s and 70s, our heat index or feel like temperature climbed to near 100 degrees.

With slightly warmer temperatures expected Tuesday and Wednesday, expect a feel like temperature between 100 to 105 degrees. This opens the door to possible heat advisories for portions of North Carolina.

The reason for the rise in temperatures is due to high pressure over northern Alabama and Georgia. Yes, it's providing sunny and mostly dry weather, but, it's coming at a cost. Over the next few days, be mindful of how your body is responding to the heat. Make sure you stay hydrated and take breaks from the heat as needed.

Temperatures will trend down, into the upper 80s to low 90s by the end of the work week. This cool down is due to a growing rain chance. An approaching cold front will likely stall over the North Carolina-Virginia border Wednesday. This will bring a southerly flow to the area and through that process moisture to the state.

This will help set the stage for a stronger cold front that will arrive behind it on Thursday as the ridge of high pressure weakens. So expect an isolated to scattered rain threat Tuesday and Wednesday during the afternoon and evening hours. By Thursday we'll likely host scattered to numerous showers and storms.
