Some farmers say hemp is going to breathe new life into a lot of their livelihoods. Growers say the Tar Heel State's environment is good for the hemp plant.

This week, farmers and hemp business owners held a festival to educate the public about what hemp is, and what it's not.

“My wife's dad was one of the first to get a hemp  license. He's a third generation farmer. He farms over 2,000 acres of soybeans, corn, tobacco and he said if we take care of the paperwork he'd take a chance and it kind of spent off from there,” Charles Peterson with The Hemp Source said.

While hemp is a distant cousin of marijuana, it will not get you high. Hemp's also very versatile. It can be used to make paper, textiles, insulation, biofuel and even food.
