While there's been some progress, city schools continue to fall short when it comes to physical education.

With just days to go until the new school year, the department of education released a new report.

It found that last year 76 percent of students had gym class.

That's up by 23 percentage points from just two years ago -- but still falling short.

A decades old law requires that all city students have some type of physical education.

For years, hundreds of city schools have not complied. For some it's a space issue, others there's no gym teacher on staff.

The DOE says it’s working to remedy that by hiring 150 gym teachers this year.

The mayor has also previously promised to build, lease or retrofit space for gym classes at 200 public schools over the next several years.
