SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Rescue Mission's kitchen was a veritable buffet of cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy and, of course, turkey.

It was also stuffed with volunteers. More than 400 came out on Thursday to help prepare feasts for the community.

The Popp family volunteered at the Rescue Mission on Thanksgiving for seven years.

“We like coming back and being able to give back on Thanksgiving,” said Tyler Popp. “It’s not like we have a big feast so we figure come out here and have a bigger family.”

They’re not the only ones who make volunteering a family tradition.

“You see the same faces over and over so the neat thing about Thanksgiving is you come and you volunteer and then you kind of get bit by this really neat volunteer Thanksgiving bug,” said Dan Seiburg, the Rescue Mission’s CEO.
