SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse firefighter is the second person charged in connection with last month's hit-and-run that left a Syracuse teen dead. Suspended Syracuse firefighter Ted Ackerman is set to be arraigned Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Syracuse City Court. He is being charged with tampering with physical evidence, a class E felony.
Former Onondaga County DA investigator Peter Rauch is accused of hitting 18-year-old Seth Collier with his county-owned car. Collier died from his injuries two days after the crash.
The crash happened back in March along North Salina Street. The vehicle involved was found near the Pastime Athletic Club.
Ted Ackerman heads the board of directors at the club. A source tells Spectrum News that Ackerman was at the Pastime Club when city police served him the appearance ticket on Thursday.
Sources say that after the crash, Ackerman was following the vehicle driven by Rauch and saw the crash happen.
Ackerman is now facing a felony count of tampering with physical evidence and is scheduled to be arraigned on the felony charge Friday morning in Syracuse City Court.
Ackerman was suspended by the city after the crash.
Meanwhile, Rauch still faces a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Police have spoken with restaurant owners in the area that say Rauch was drinking on the night of the crash.
His case will be reviewed by a grand jury.
Because of Rauch's connection with the Onondaga County DA's office, the investigation is being handled by Oswego County DA Greg Oakes.
