A struggling, injured rookie.

A young backup who's had disastrous results almost every time he's played.

A 35-year-old veteran who was out of football and on vacation before the Bills called him two weeks ago.

Those are the Bills options as they face a quarterback quandary following Sunday's devastating loss in Houston.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said first round pick Josh Allen is week-to-week with an elbow injury after Sunday's setback, meaning there's a chance he'll miss next weekend's game against the Colts.

That leaves Nathan Peterman and Derek Anderson in the event Allen is out.

Peterman’s pick-six in the final two minutes gave Houston the lead in what was a tied game.  He added another interception on the next drive, giving him nine interceptions in just 79 career pass attemps in the regular season, or an INT on one out of every nine throws.

After repeated embarrassing moments in his few appearances, it leaves many questioning why he remains on the roster and how the Bills could possible play him again.

"I’m confident in every football player on our football team. With respect to Nate, it’s no different," McDermott said. "I know he had some good plays yesterday and there are some plays that he’d like to have back. I’m confident in every player on our team. It didn't turn out well. I've got to evaluate the other plays that were good as well to see if we can build on that."

The alternative to Peterman is Anderson, who just joined the team a week ago still has some serious catching up to do if he's going to be pressed into playing so soon.

"I think the newness, whether it’s the offense to some extent, whether it’s the players he’d be working with, McDermott said. “There’s just familiarity and you build trust over a course of reps together and so on and so forth. That’s part of the challenge."

"He’s picking it up. To come off the street and come in, he’s upstairs right now, he’s upstairs all the time,” added offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. "I don’t think you can put the whole thing on him. He’s played a long time, so concepts are concepts. It’s understanding the language. He’s grinding it out."

McDermott said it would be a longshot to think the Bills could bring in another quarterback and have them ready to play this weekend.  So if Allen can't, it's Peterman or Anderson leading the Bills offense that's ranked dead last in the league in passing yards and points scored.
